The University of Wisconsin Superior battled for 60 minutes with the no. 5 ranked team in the nation, but University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point scored with just 53.7 seconds remaining to edge out the Yellowjackets 3-2 in a rare Tuesday night non-conference tilt at Wessman Arena in Superior.
After UW-Superior (6-12-1) successfully killed off an early powerplay chance for No. 5 UW-Stevens Point (14-4-3), Logan Fredericks put the Pointers up 1-0 at 8:54 of the second, slipping a goal through the Yellowjacket defense with an assist from Tanner Karty. UWS would get its own chance on the powerplay later in the period and made good on it as senior
Jordan Neduzak (Morden, Man./Morden Collegiate Institute) ripped his eighth of the year, connecting on a rebound with assists going to junior
Eric Shand (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas H.S.) and senior
Owen Stauber (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown H.S.). Just 21 seconds later, Stevens Point would give the Yellowjackets another powerplay chance, but the Pointers would stave off the opportunity to go to the locker room even at one apiece.
The two teams skated 4-on-4 for 95 seconds in the early going of the second while trading short powerplay opportunities. Fredericks would go off for hooking, giving the Yellowjackets another opportunity with the man advantage at 12:52 of the period. Just one second after the penalty subsided, Jacob Barber made good on a breakaway for UW-Stevens Point, putting the Pointers up 2-1 at 14:53 of the period. UW-Superior was quick on the answer once again as sophomore
Viktor Sallhag (Vasteras, Sweden/Wenströmska Gymnasium) netted his fourth goal of the year just nine seconds later, assisted by freshman Jacob Hamilton at 15:02 of the period. Once again, the two teams would head to the intermission even, this time at 2-2 before the final frame.
The Yellowjackets would have two more chances on the powerplay in the third period but could not break through; the game seemed destined for overtime when Stevens Point claimed the lead in the closing seconds, with Karty scoring the game-winning goal at 19:06 of the third. UWS called its timeout and had a chance to pull goaltender
Kyle Miller (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake H.S.) for an extra skater in the closing seconds but could not secure for the tying score. The Yellowjackets finished 1-for-6 with the man advantage, while the Pointers were 0-for-2 on the powerplay. Miller made 30 saves for UW-Superior, while Max Milosek made 23 saves for the Pointers.
