The University of Wisconsin Superior made a push in the second half, but Northland College made its halftime lead hold up, defeating the Yellowjackets 84-76 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play on Saturday evening in Ashland, Wisconsin.
After the LumberJacks took a seven-point lead to the locker room at halftime, UW-Superior (5-15, 4-7 UMAC) knotted the game at 41-all just 3:57 into the second half. Northland regained its lead at the midpoint of the period, scoring 13-of-16 points for a 10-point lead that the Yellowjackets would not be able to overcome, eventually falling by an eight-point margin. Northland shot 46.7 percent for the game but was hot from beyond the arc, hitting 14 three-pointers to push past UW-Superior, including hitting 8-of-15 in the second half.
UWS shot 50.8 percent as a team in the game, hitting 18-of-33 shots in the second half including 5-of-11 from three-point range to shoot 54.6 percent in the second half. Junior guard
Nate Kalien (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls H.S.) hit a trio of three-pointers, finishing with 11 points on the day. For the second-straight game, sophomore
Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights H.S.)y led the Yellowjackets on the day with 18 points. Freshman
Rafael Monteiro (São Paulo, Brazil/Santa Marcelina College) fell one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards to go with 15 points. Junior
Shaq Coleman (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East H.S.) rounded out the quarter of players to hit double digits for UW-Superior as he added 12 points on the night. Rijo Jackson (23 points) and Dan Campion (22) each had four three-pointers to lead Northland.
