The second-ranked University of Wisconsin River Falls secured a season sweep of the University of Wisconsin-Superior with a 2-1 victory over the Yellowjackets on Saturday night in the teams' Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series finale at Wessman Arena in Superior.
UW-Superior (7-13-0, 1-7-0 WIAC) got the scoring started on the day when junior defender
Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River H.S.) skated over the blue line and dumped a puck on net at 3:39 of the first: a shot that found its way over goaltender Tatyana Delaittre's shoulder for the early score, with an assist going to freshman
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park H.S.). The Yellowjackets nursed the one-goal lead the remainder of the opening period, but no. 2 UW-River Falls (21-1-0, 6-1-0 WIAC) held a slight edge in shots-on-goal, 9-to-7 after the opening frame. Despite a pair of powerplay chances for the Falcons in the second period, UWS maintained its lead through 40 minutes, with senior goaltender
Kim Kobar (The Pas, Man./Margaret Barbour Collegiate) keeping the Yellowjackets alive with 10 saves in the period. River Falls held a 19-13 advantage in shots after two.
The Falcons did all of their damage in the final 2:01 of regulation, with top-scorer Dani Sibley finally breaking through for UW-River Falls with an unassisted wrist-shot that broke up the shutout. The second-ranked team in the nation was not done there as just 90 seconds later, Haley Nielsen skated in a shot, assisted by Sibley and Carly Moran to put the Falcons up for good with just 31 seconds remaining. Kobar would take the tough-luck loss for UWS, making 25 saves on the afternoon. Delaittre made 18 saves for UW-River Falls. The Yellowjackets finished 0-for-2 on the powerplay, while the Falcons were 0-for-3 with the skater advantage.
