Superior pushes back in final minutes, but overcome by Saint John's

Saint John's 4, UW-Superior 3

SUPERIOR, Wis. (October 11, 2017) – Superior pushed the Johnnies to the limit in the second half, but were overcome by Saint John's by one goal.

The Johnnies scored quickly and early in the first half, first in the 11th and then back-to-back in the 21st and 23rd minutes. Superior would have a rough go in the first half, down 3-0 at halftime.

Harry Simpson (Derby, England/Derby Moor C.C.) scored his first goal of the season in the 64th minute as the Yellowjackets pushed the Johnnies back 3-1. Mualigbe Keita (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Prairie Seeds Academy), Jon Bucklew (Somerset, Wis./Somerset), and Simpson all had good looks on goal in the second, but the Johnnies keeper proved to be too much. The Johnnies' Daniel Bruckbauer scored his third goal of the game in the 82nd minute to go up 4-1.

Superior would give Saint John's a run for their money in the final moments of the game. Aaron Blanchard (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) would score in the 89th minute on a ball that Elliot Chapman (Lancaster, England/Ripley St. Thomas) deflected back to the middle of the box that he would bicycle-kick in for the score. Jonah Garcia (Eagan, Minn./Eagan H.S.) put more pressure on the Johnnies in the 90th minute by scoring on a ball again assisted by Chapman, but with only five seconds remaining.

Superior would fall 4-3.

The Yellowjackets outshot the Johnnies 18-10, with 15 of those shots coming in the second half. Superior was also able to put the defensive pressure on the in second half by allowing only two shots. The contest became heated in the final 20 minutes, as five yellow cards were handed out between the two teams.

Superior will travel to New Ulm, Minn. this Saturday, Oct. 14, to take on Martin Luther. They will finish their postponed game with Martin Luther at 2:15 p.m. and then play the regular scheduled contest at 3 p.m.
