UW-Superior 6, Martin Luther 1
NEW ULM, Minn. (October 14, 2017) – Superior played a total of 119 minutes, and scored eight goals Saturday as they finished up a previous contest and completed another against the Martin Luther Knights.
The first game was the last 29 minutes of the two teams' first matchup of the year that was postponed from Sept. 23 after a lighting hazard. The 'Jackets came into this game already ahead 5-0 and ended up adding two goals in the final 29 minutes.
Leonardo Paredes (Campinas, Brazil/Sao Paschoall) scored an unassisted goal in the 73rd minute, and was followed by
Pontus Taavemark (Taeby, Sweden/Taeby Enskilden), who scored his first career goal on a header after
Miguel Ocampo (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) sent a corner kick into the box.
The second game was much of the same. Martin Luther snuck a ball past
Dalton VonKaenel (Eagan, Minn./Eagan H.S.) in the first two minutes to go up 1-0, but the 'Jacket offense had his back, as
Jon Bucklew (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) scored in the 11th minute after he was dished the ball from Adrean Leal, dribbled around the defender, and got the goal on a nutmeg of the Knights' keeper.
Superior would score twice in the 28th minute, first from
Eric Watson (Thunder Bay, Ont./Hammarskjold), assisted by
Gunnar O'Neill-Sengbush (Duluth, Minn./Marshall School), on a nifty shot from the baseline, and then from
Blake Doyea (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka), assisted by
Miguel Ocampo (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park), on a strike from the 18-yard line.
The Yellowjackets weren't done yet,
Jorge Silva (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) scored his first goal of the season on an a ball assisted by Paredes that would end the half with the 'Jackets up 4-1.
Superior added two more goals in the second half. Bucklew would net his second of the game on a 18-yard shot that was deflected by O'Neill-Sengbush and put back in by Bucklew in the 62nd minute. Ocampo would add another point to his game line in the 87th minute after
Archie Gjerdrum (St. Paul, Minn./Como Park) found him in the box for the score.
The 'Jackets fired 23 shots in the second outing, and played great defense in the second half, not allowing a shot from the Knights. VonKaenel made three saves in 85 minutes, and
Brandon Johnson (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks Senior) found his first action of the season with five minutes in goal.
Superior will close the rest of their regular season at home, starting this Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 3:15 p.m. as they take on the Northwestern Eagles at NBC Sports Complex.
