Yellowjackets win their fifth straight beating Finlandia

UW-Superior 3, Finlandia 0

HANCOCK, Mich. (October 11, 2017) – Yellowjackets beat the Finlandia Lions for the second time this season, but this time on the Lion's turf. Anna Ribich (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East) led the 'Jackets with eight kills, while Mackenzie Dahlin (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna) had 13 digs in three sets.

The Yellowjackets got the lead early, and never gave it up in the first set. An ace from Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) opened the lead 4-1, followed by two more points from Mara Cameron (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) on the kill, and an error from Finlandia to make it 6-2. The lead stretched even more as Superior went 16-7 on another error from the Lions. The set would end on two more errors from the Lions for a 25-15 win for the Yellowjackets.

The second set would be a bit closer, but still a win for the 'Jackets. Katie Boone (Mindoro, Wis./Melrose-Mindoro) would find an ace to make the score 9-4 in favor of Superior. A kill from Elise Ertl (Phillips, Wis./Phillips), assisted by Megan Holz (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) would seal the set 25-20.

Superior would open the third set 7-2 after Ribich notched another kill. Superior was cruising at this point, going up 17-9 as Leah Nightingale (Dayton, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) added a kill assisted by Holz. Superior would finish the match on a kill from Ashley Runck (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley), again assisted by Holz.

Holz would finish the game with 27 assists, while Colligan added seven kills, and Cameron six kills.

The Yellowjackets improved to 15-9 on the season, they will take on UMAC opponent Martin Luther at 1 p.m. for Parents Weekend, Saturday Oct. 14.
