SUPERIOR, Wis. (October 14, 2017) – Superior won their sixth straight game as they swept the Martin Luther Knights 25-14, 25-20, 25-17 in front of a Parents Weekend crowd.
Superior tied the first set early at 6-6 after an attack error from the Knights, and then take a 7-6 lead when
Ashley Runck (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley) killed the ball, assisted by
Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley). They continued to hold the lead, going up 18-10 on a ferocious kill from
Mara Cameron (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids), again assisted by VerWay. A bad set from the Knights would end the set, 25-14.
Martin Luther would fire back in the second set, going up 7-5 after an attack error from the Yellowjackets, But Superior would get a kill from
Anna Ribich (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East), assisted by VerWay and then an error from the Knights to tie at 8-8. Superior then stepped on the gas, going up 17-12 after
Leah Nightingale (Dayton, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) notched a kill, assisted by VerWay. The 'Jackets would take the set, 25-20 on back-to-back errors from Martin Luther.
The 'Jackets were clicking in the final set, going up 7-3 on another VerWay to Ribich kill. They would continue to hold the lead at 15-11 on attack error from the Knights, and then
Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) would get a VerWay assisted kill to go up 16-12. Superior would score three straight points to win the set and the match 25-17.
VerWay had another great game setting the ball, getting 35 assists on the match, while Colligan led the team in kills with nine. Nightingale added eight kills, while Runck and Cameron both finished with seven.
Mackenzie Dahlin (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna) played well defensively, getting 17 digs for the Yellowjackets.
Superior will travel to St. Paul to take on the top-ranked Northwestern Eagles this Tuesday at 7 p.m.
