'Jackets shutout Northwestern, clinch playoff spot

UW-Superior 3, Northwestern 0

SUPERIOR, Wis. (October 17, 2017) – In a battle for the number two spot in the UMAC, the Yellowjackets shutout the Northwestern Eagles 3-0, beating them for the third time in two seasons. With the win, Superior clinched their spot in the UMAC postseason.

In a rough and defensive first half, Superior's Jon Bucklew (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) recorded his seventh goal of the season on a partial breakaway goal that was assisted by Blake Doyea (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) in the 37th minute. Superior would continue to play great defense in the first, allowing only one shot.

The Yellowjackets picked up the pace again the in second half, pounding the goalie's box with shots. Fernando Bicalho (Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil/Kickapoo (Mo.)) would score his second goal on the season on a bending free kick from the 20 yard line, putting the 'Jackets up 2-0 in the 63rd minute.

Bicalho and Doyea added some more points to their lines on the third goal of the game for Superior. On a corner kick from the right side of the box, Bicalho twisted the ball high and over the entire crowd of Eagle defenders to a wide open Doyea, who, from the left side, shot the ball off the right post and in to increase the gap 3-0 at the 75-minute mark.

The Yellowjackets played phenomenal defense on the day, allowing only four shots from the Eagles, a team that averages 15.08/game. The 'Jackets produced 20 shots, half of which found the goal. Dalton VonKaenel (Eagan, Minn./Eagan H.S.) got his third shutout of the season, saving two shots on the day.

Superior will be home once again, hosting North Central, Saturday Oct. 21 at 3:15 p.m. in the NBC Sports Complex.
