Northwestern 3, UW-Superior 0 | 25-13, 25-23, 25-13
ST. PAUL, Minn. (October 17, 2017) – Superior took on the no. 9 ranked Northwestern Eagles Tuesday for their second meeting in St. Paul this season. The Eagles proved to be too much for the 'Jackets, winning in three sets.
The 'Jackets would find themselves in a early hole, down 8-1 in the opening set. A timeout from head coach
Lynne Deadrick motivated Superior to score three points, including a kill from
Anna Ribich (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East), assisted by
Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley), to make the game 10-4. A kill from
Leah Nightingale (Dayton, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's), assisted by VerWay, would cut the Eagle lead to nine, but the 'Jackets would fall 25-13 in the first set.
Superior would put the pressure on Northwestern in the second set. Three straight points would give the 'Jackets the lead at 5-4, after a kill error from the Eagles. More pressure mounted after Nightingale notched another kill, assisted by VerWay to retain a 9-8 lead for Superior. After a Yellowjacket timeout, Superior would score on another error from Northwestern to make it 21-20 in favor of the Eagles, and then score three more from Nightingale and Ribich to tie the game at 23. But the Eagles would close the game on two straight points, at 25-23.
The third set was much like the first. The Eagles got out to a 6-2 lead, but
Anna Ribich (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East) notched another kill, assisted by VerWay, to cut the lead to three. Superior would dig into the Eagles lead getting two points on a kill from
Mara Cameron (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids), assisted by VerWay, and then a service ace from
Mackenzie Dahlin (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna) to make it 13-7. Superior would score six more in the set, and fall short to the Eagles 25-13.
VerWay had 25 assists in the match, while Ribich led the team with 11 kills, followed by Nightingale with 10. VerWay and
Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) would lead the team with eight kills a piece.
Superior will return home this Saturday, Oct. 21, for Senior Day and their last home game of the season against Minnesota Morris at 12 p.m.
