Goodin finds the goal twice as Superior opens campaign with win

UW-Superior 2, Concordia-Wis. 1

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (October 27, 2017) – In a neutral site game with Concordia-Wis., the Yellowjackets came out with a win in their first game of the 2017-18 campaign.

It didn't take long for the Yellowjackets to get the rust off of their skates, as Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover) scored four minutes into the opening period on a power-play goal that was assisted by Agnese Apsite (Dreilini, Latvia/Rig Distance Secondary) and Amber Heidenreich (Phillips, Wis./Hayward). Superior would fire seven more shots in the period, but to no avail.

Goodin didn't waste any time heading into the second period, as she scored the even-handed goal, assisted by Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Man./St. Mary's Academy), two minutes and one second in. The Yellowjacket defense did their part in the second as well, as two power-play opportunities were given to the Falcons, but they could not capitalize. Superior would head into the third with a commanding 2-0 lead.

Concordia was able to score in the third after a checking penalty was given to the Yellowjackets, to make the score 2-1. Superior would continue to fire shots, getting 13 in the third period; the Falcons made one final move with 40 seconds remaining, by pulling their goalie, but a the Yellowjackets were too much, winning 2-1.

Shots were practically even in the contest, as Superior collected 29 to Concordia's 27. Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River), Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island), and Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) were the main shot-takers for the 'Jackets, getting five, four, and four respectively.

Sky Brown (Lenore, Man./Virden Collegiate Institute) saw the start in goal for Superior and clocked all 60 minutes, making 26 saves on the night.

Superior will open the home portion of their schedule tomorrow, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m. against the No. 7 Gustavus Adolphus Gusties in Wessman Arena.
