'Jackets bested in OT against No. 7 Gustavus

Gustavus Apolphus 4, UW-Superior 3

SUPERIOR, Wis. (October 28, 2017) – In their home opener, the Yellowjackets played host to No. 7 Gustavus Adolphus, pushing the Gusties to the limit but falling in overtime.

The two teams became familiar with one another and played well defensively in the first period, ending it with a 0-0 draw.

Superior would come out firing in the second as Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover) carried her net-finding ways over from the night before, scoring the goal nine minutes in, assisted by Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and Amber Heidenreich (Phillips, Wis./Hayward). She would score again seven minutes later, again assisted by Heidenreich and Jenna Curtis (Siren, Wis./Webster).

Two minutes later, Superior would control on a power play, but Erica Power would find the short-handed goal for Gustavus to make the score 2-1 heading into the third.

The Gusties wouldn't go down so easily, as Gustavus fired back and Kaitlyn Klein scored unassisted to even the score in the third minute of the final period.

Superior didn't give up hope, 11 minutes into the third period, Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) would get her first goal of the 2017-18 campaign assisted by Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) and Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) to regain the lead 3-2.

The Gusties fought back with 23 seconds remaining in the game to tie the score at 3-3 and head to overtime. Gustavus would then score the game-winner two minutes in, downing the 'Jackets 4-3.

Superior was out-shot 20-37 in the game, while Sky Brown (Lenore, Man./Virden Collegiate Institute) made 33 saves in the game. The 'Jackets also fell behind on faceoffs 28-34.

The 'Jackets will look to bounce back next week as they skate another back-to-back, playing St. Kate's on the road and then at home Nov. 3 and 4.
