Heid scores two as ‘Jackets win at St. Kate’s

UW-Superior 5, St. Kate's 2

ST. PAUL, Minn. (November 3, 2017)Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) scored two goals in the first and third periods to help Superior to a big win over St. Kate's Friday.

The first period opened with good defense from the 'Jackets as they held off two Wildcat power plays. Superior would find the first score in the game as Heid scored her first goal of the 2017-18 campaign with 22 seconds remaining, assisted by Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) and Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids).

The 'Jackets would be successful in their power play defense heading into the second as they warded off another Wildcat opportunity when Jenna Curtis (Siren, Wis./Webster) was called for interference. St. Kate's would even the score 1-1 six minutes into the period, but Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) would score for the 'Jackets eight minutes later, assisted by Celina Clark (Waterdown, Ont./St. Mary), to go up 2-1.

The Wildcats would add another goal in the final two minutes to make the score 2-2 heading into the third.

The 'Jackets would combine their solid defense and offense in the third to put away the Wildcats. Heid would get her second goal of the game unassisted, five minutes in to gain the 3-2 advantage. Superior would then fire a barrage of shots around the nine minute mark and find the net as Dulong scored her first of the season, assisted by Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park). The final goal would belong to Clark, assisted by Kaylee Wood (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) to secure the Yellowjacket victory.

Superior notched their highest shot total of the season with 50 to St. Kate's 26. Sky Brown (Lenore, Man./Virden Collegiate Institute) had another good performance in goal, saving 24 shots in 60 minutes.

The 'Jackets will play their second game of a back-to-back with St. Kate's tomorrow at home at 2 p.m. in Wessman Arena.
