St. Scholastica 2, UW-Superior 1
DULUTH, Minn. (October 3, 2017) – The Yellowjackets faced off against their rival across the small pond Tuesday afternoon, St. Scholastica. The 'Jackets were able to get on the board in the second half, but were unable to overcome the Saints.
The first half was a stalemate between the two highest scoring teams in the UMAC. Superior got 11 shot attempts compared to the Saint two, but neither team found the net.
The Saints found the net first in the second half, in the 47th minute and then again the 76th minute to go up 2-0 on the Yellowjackets.
Gunnar O'Neill-Sengbush (Duluth, Minn./Marshall School) scored assisted from
Mualigbe Keita (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Prairie Seeds Academy) soon after in the 77th minute. This would be the only goal of the game for Superior, even though they added six more shots in the second period.
This was definitely a heated rivalry game, as the officials handed out eight yellow cards between the two teams.
Jon Bucklew (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) provided five shots for the 'Jackets while
Blake Doyea (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) had three. Dalton VonKaenel saved two shots in his 90 minutes from the goalkeeper position.
Superior will look to rebound later this week as they face Crown on the road on Saturday Oct. 7, and then St. Mary's on Sunday Oct. 8.
