Superior wins in four to grab conference win over Saints

UW-Superior 3, St. Scholastica 1

SUPERIOR, Wis. (October 3, 2017) – The Yellowjackets grabbed another UMAC win against the Saints Tuesday evening as they came from behind in the fourth set to win. Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji ) had 15 kills in the match, while Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) had 44 assists.

The first set was like every set, close. The game was knotted 5-5 after a Leah Nightingale (Dayton, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's ) kill, assisted from VerWay, but Superior soon jumped out in from 12-8 after Mackenzie Dahlin (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna ) recorded an ace. Superior would hold on to the lead through the rest of the match, winning 25-20.

The second set proved to have more ties and lead changes, as Scholastica tied the match 13-13 after a service error from the Yellowjackets. This error fueled the 'Jackets to score three straight to go up 17-14. Scholastica would threaten with a 20-20 tie, and a 24-23 point, but Superior pulled out the second set win after another kill from Nightingale assisted by VerWay.

The third set would sway in the Saints way as they came back from a 17-12 Yellowjacket lead to win the set 25-21.

The final fourth included nine ties between the teams. The pivotal point in the match was when Superior took a 17-16 lead on a kill from Colligan assisted by Dahlin. Superior would then hold the lead until the final point was delivered from Colligan on a kill assisted from VerWay.

Three Yellowjackets finished with double-digit kills including Colligan with 15, Ashley Runck (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley ) with 11, and Nightingale with 10. Dahlin recorded a season-high 30 digs, while Colligan added 23, and Megan Holz (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) 14.

The Yellowjackets will play again tomorrow, Oct. 4, as they travel to St. Kate's to take on the Wildcats at 7 p.m.
