Gustavus 3, Yellowjackets 1
SAINT PETER, Minn. (November 10, 2017) - Offense has been hard to come by for the Yellowjacket men's hockey team so far in 2017-18, as they have found the back of the net just five times in the season's first three games. Friday's game at Gustavus followed the similar early-season trend, meaning the youthful team is going to be forced to wait a little longer to have its break out game on offense.
Gustavus scored the first three goals of the game on the way to a 3-1 win over the Yellowjackets (0-4-0, 0-0-0 WIAC) Friday night in St. Peter, Minnesota.
Early on the teams traded chances in what was an evenly played first period. Late in the first period the Gusties drew first blood, when Jake McCann converted an odd-man rush with 1:37 to go in the frame to make it 1-0. The Gusties extended the lead just 1:07 into the second period, as Caleb Anderson scored on a shorthanded breakaway. Later in the second Gustavus converted on the power play, putting home a rebound at 15:02 to stretch its advantage to 3-0.
The Yellowjackets didn't go down without a fight, however, and spoiled the Gustavus shutout effort in the game's final minute. Senior
Ian Ecklund (Twig, Minn./Proctor) carried through the neutral zone and charged the Gustavus net, putting the puck past goaltender Robbie Goor with just 18 seconds to play in regulation, to get the Yellowjackets on the board and make the final score 3-1.
Colton Nelson (Hershey, Pa./Edmond North) assisted on Ecklund's second goal of the season.
Cole Skinner (Lunenberg, N.S./Parkview Education Centre) got the start for the Yellowjackets Friday, making his first appearance in nearly two seasons. He was solid in goal, playing spectacularly at times, and finished the game with 24 saves. At the other end Goor, in just his second collegiate start, earned the win with a 26 save performance.
Each team took seven penalties in the game for 14 minutes. The Yellowjackets went 0-for-6 on the power play and killed off five-of-six shorthanded chances in the contest.
Up Next: The Yellowjackets will be at St. Olaf College Saturday, November 11. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
