‘Jackets hold off Blugolds and get WIAC win

UW-Superior 3, UW-Eau Claire 2

SUPERIOR, Wis. (November 10, 2017) – In the Yellowjackets' first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) matchup of 2017-18, they faced the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds at home. Superior was able to capitalize on Blugold errors and get the 3-2 win.

Superior came out with offense on their mind in the first period, as Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) scored her second goal of the season on an almost breakaway, assisted by Amber Heidenreich (Phillips, Wis./Hayward) to get the early 1-0 lead. The 'Jackets were then able to take advantage of poor Blugold defense when Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) scored in the crease after a pass from Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island).

The 'Jackets would hold a 2-0 lead heading into the second.

Superior would get an early chance at a power play at the 18:18 mark of the second period. They would get five shots off during that span, but were unable to connect. Superior would get a second chance about a minute later and wouldn't let this one slip away. Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover) scored the power play goal from left of the crease, assisted by Martinson and Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids), to go up 3-0.

The Blugolds would threaten on  two power play opportunities to end the second period, but Superior would hold, securing a 3-0 lead at the end of two.

Superior would be on the defensive in the third period, but the Blugolds would be on the attack, scoring two back-to-back goals in the 14th and 15th minutes to cut the lead to one. The Yellowjackets would suffer a tripping penalty with 1:24 remaining, but the power play defense would stand firm, getting the conference win.

The game was clearly a conference matchup, as 15 penalties were handed out between the teams. Superior was able to get 23 total shots off in the game, to Eau Claire's 30, and Sky Brown (Lenore, Man./Virden Collegiate Institute) saved 30 shots for the 'Jackets in the net. Martinson was the standout in the game, collecting a goal and assist.

Superior will have a week off, playing next Saturday afternoon at Stevens Point, Nov. 18. The puck is set to drop at 2:30 p.m.
