SUPERIOR, Wis. (November 17, 2017) – Superior sparked a two-goal comeback in the third period of their matchup with the Northland College Lumberjacks, but it fell short in overtime.
Superior would get in penalty trouble early, two minutes in, but good special teams killed the Lumberjack power play. Another Northland power play would ensue at the eight-minute mark, but another good stretch with the special teams would again keep the Lumberjacks at bay. The first period would end at a draw 0-0
The second period would continue the 0-0 trend, until a Northland power play resulted in a goal. Superior would amp up the pressure thereafter, piling on the shots, but the period would end Yellowjackets behind 1-0.
The Lumberjacks would score again early in the third period, but Superior didn't give up. Alec MacKenzie (Ottawa, Ont./École Secondaire Garneau) would score a short-handed goal with one second remaining on the Lumberjack power play; his first of the season, at 8:22. Daniel Litchke (Superior, Wis./Superior) would then score his third of the season less than two minutes later, assisted by Bruno Birzitis (Riga, Latvia/Riga Distance Education Secondary) and Andrew Durham (Plano, Texas/Plano East), to even the score at 2-2. Neither team could find the twine by regulation, sending the game to overtime.
The Lumberjacks would score 57 seconds into the period, getting the best of the 'Jackets.
Superior was able to score in the third period thanks to their increase of shots in the last two periods: 11 and 13 respectively, they outshot Northland 34-30 overall.
The matchup also included 13 penalties between the two teams.
The Yellowjackets will continue their home stand tomorrow night, Nov. 18, taking on the Finlandia Lions at 7:05 p.m. in Wessman Arena.
