UW-Superior 65, Marian 57

MENOMONIE, Wis. (November 18, 2017) – The Yellowjackets got their first win of the 2017-18 season Saturday afternoon, defeating Marian University and taking third place at the UW-Stout Tip-Off Tournament.

Vid Milenkovic (Zurich, Switzerland/DSB Belgrade, Serbia) was the first on the board for Superior, getting a 2-point jumper at 18:40. Superior would get out to a 12-8 lead after a 6-0 run on points from Shaq Coleman (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) and Milenkovic. Superior would take a big lead with five minutes left in the first half; Coleman drained a jumper to take a 30-16 lead. The half would end with Superior up  by 16 points after two Rob Lander (Pitesti, Romania/Trinity International School) free throws.

Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) started the half with a mid-ranged jumper, extending the lead to 18. At the 16:38 mark, Superior would find their largest lead of the game, 21 points, after Coleman found another layup. Marian would make a small run with mid-way through the second half, but Superior would hit six straight free throws to get the win at 65-57.

Coleman repeated his performance from the night before, getting 20 points in 33 minutes. Colton Williams (Columbia Heights, Minn. /Columbia Heights) also found himself in double digits, getting 12 points. Milenkovic finished the game just one rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Superior shot 55 percent from the field in the first half to build their lead, and then shot 83 percent from the stripe in the second half, 15-of-18, to secure the win.

Marian's Alex Manhardt scored 19 points for the Sabres.

This marks the first win under first-year head coach Greg Polkowski.

The Yellowjackets will face a familiar WIAC opponent in River Falls this Tuesday, Nov. 21, on the road. Tip-off set for 8 p.m.
