Augsburg 5, UW-Superior 1
ST. PAUL, Minn. (November 21, 2017) - Tuesday the Yellowjacket women's hockey team faced one of its stiffest tests of the 2017-18 season, taking on a red-hot Augsburg team. The Yellowjackets entered the game coming up on the short end in two of their last three games. Meanwhile, the Auggies were winners of five in a row.
And unfortunately for the Yellowjackets, both teams remain on the same trajectories.
Augsburg broke a 1-1 tie early in the third period and kept the offense going, rolling to a 5-1 win Tuesday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena in Minneapolis.
The Auggies came out fast, outshooting the Yellowjackets (4-4-0, 1-1-0 WIAC) 13-4 in the opening period and drawing first blood when Bridget Wagner scored at 14:50 to make it 1-0.
Augsburg kept its foot on the gas to start the second, forcing Yellowjacket head coach
Dan Laughlin to call his timeout just six minutes into the frame. Whatever he said during the break in the action worked, as the Yellowjackets began to generate some offense of their own. They held an 11-5 edge in shots in the second period and tied the score on a late power play when
Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) scored her third goal of the season, erasing the deficit and sending the teams to the locker room deadlocked at 1-1.
Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Man./St. Mary's Academy) and
Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) assisted on the tying goal.
The Auggies got the eventual game winner just 2:21 into the third period when Kayla Murray found the back of the net. Jacie Hoehn scored a pair of goals four minutes apart later in the period to extend the Augsburg lead, and Mikayla Jones closed out the scoring with 1:05 left on the clock to make the final score 5-1.
Sky Brown (Lenore, Man./Virden Collegiate Institute) got the start and was busy in goal for the Yellowjackets, making 27 saves. At the other end McKenna Manalli made 21 stops for Augsburg.
The Yellowjackets went 1-for-1 on the power play and killed off 4-of-5 Augsburg power play chances.
Up Next: The Yellowjackets return to WIAC play Friday, December 1 when they return home to host UW-River Falls. Game time from Wessman Arena is set for 7:00 p.m.
