UW-Stout 67, UW-Superior 53
SUPERIOR, Wis. (November 26, 2017) – The Yellowjackets shot the ball at a good clip, 51 percent from the field, but it wasn't enough, as the Blue Devils got the final win of the Merrill Thompson Classic Sunday afternoon.
Superior tied the game early as Colton Williams (Columbia Heights, Minn. /Columbia Heights) hit a 3-pointer to answer Stout's, leveling at 3-3. Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) then found the lead on the next possession, hitting a three of his own, assisted by Vid Milenkovic (Zurich, Switzerland/DSB Belgrade, Serbia) to take a 6-3 lead. The 'Jackets would extend the lead to 13-7 after Scott his a 2-pointer, again assisted by Milenkovic.
Stout would climb back and take the lead at 16-15, and then again at 21-20. Another mid-range jumper from Scott would cut the lead to one, 23-22, but Stout would build their lead heading into halftime, up 36-29.
Shaq Coleman (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) would cut the Stout lead to five at the 13:59 mark of the second period, 46-41, but Stout kept padding their lead. Coleman would cut it again to five at 9:25, with back-to-back free throws, but the Blue Devils stretched their lead to its largest at 17, and then finished the game up 67-53.
Turnovers plagued the Yellowjackets, giving up 16. Stout would shoot more than double Superior's amount of free throws, hitting 16-of-18, compared to 4-of-8 from the 'Jackets.
Coleman had 17 points in the game, followed by Williams and Scott each with 10. Milenkovic finished with nine points, three boards and three assists.
Stout's Sam Ortman led both teams with 20 points, 16 of which came in the second half.
Superior will travel to coach Greg Polkowski's former team, UW-Eau Claire, next Tuesday, taking on the Blugolds Nov. 28.
