Kontny’s 31 fuels Yellowjackets to win

UW-Superior 67, Minnesota Morris 57

SUPERIOR, Wis. (December 9, 2017) – Senior Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) scored a game-high 31 points Saturday night to help the Yellowjackets to a UMAC victory. She lit the Cougars up in the second half, scoring 26.

The Yellowjackets were off to a hot start, scoring 12 straight points to open up a 12-2 game. The lead would then extend to 17-3 on Kontny's only points of the first half, a steal that led to a layup and then a 3-pointer assisted by Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled). The Cougars would soon make a run of their own, getting to 17-16, but Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) would provide a layup to end the quarter up 19-16.

The second quarter saw few baskets for Superior, only getting three points, and down one point at halftime, 26-25.

The third found the Yellowjackets back on their scoring pace, getting the lead once again on a Jade Tucker (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) 2-point jumper to start the period. Reinertson would provide a jumper to tie a 38-38, followed by five-straight buckets from Kontny to end the quarter up 47-46.

The 'Jackets played great defense in the fourth, followed by great office, getting layups and open threes from Amelia Leger (Andover, Minn./Andover) and Kontny. The 'Jackets would suffocate the Cougars offense in the final five minutes, not allowing a point.

Tucker was the only other double-digit scorer for Superior, getting 12 points and seven rebounds. Kontny added seven rebounds, six of which came on the offensive end. Leger made two 3-pointers. Scoring eight.

The Cougars had three players in double-digit scoring.

The 'Jackets will play the late game once again next week, traveling to Northland College this Wednesday, Dec. 12 for a 7:30 p.m. tip with the Lumberjills.
