SUPERIOR, Wis. (December 15, 2017) – Six different 'Jackets scored in a lopsided victory over the Finlandia Lions Friday night. The 'Jackets piled it on, outshooting their opponent 62-16, and winning their third in a row.
Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Man./St. Mary's Academy) got the party started for the Yellowjackets, getting the even-strength goal at 6:40 on an assist from Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island). Patrick's second of the 2017-18 campaign. Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) would then get the second of period, getting assists from Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) and Agnese Apsite (Dreilini, Latvia/Rig Distance Secondary) at 16:27. Superior would hold a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Just two minutes into the second period, senior Kelly Cockerill (Selkirk, Man./Oak Park) found her first goal of season on a shot from the right of the box, assisted by Lexie Weiss (Sleepy Eye, Minn./New Ulm). The Lions found the twine on their fourth shot of the contest at the 7:20 mark of the second period, making a dent in the 'Jacket lead.
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) soon got that three-goal lead back, scoring her six goal of the season, assisted by Patrick and Apsite at 12:01. Superior saw a golden opportunitiy in the following minutes, as the Lions had two in the penalty box; Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) would find twine on a rebound assist from Patrick and Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River), getting the 'Jacket lead to 5-1 at the second intermission.
The Lions made a change in goal at the start of the third. The 'Jackets took the first 11:59 of the final period to get their lead even greater; Celina Clark (Waterdown, Ont./St. Mary) put the puck in the net on an assist from Kaylee Wood (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park). Sergent would add her second of the game unassisted, drilling the top left corner to put the game away at 16:01.
Superior cut down on the penalties in tonight's win, spending only six minutes in the box on three penalties, compared to the Lions who spent 12 minutes on six violations.
The 'Jackets were firing on all cylinders, getting off 99 total shots, 62 on goal.
Sky Brown (Lenore, Man./Virden Collegiate Institute) got the win in goal, making 15 saves on the night.
The Yellowjackets will continue their home stand against the Lions tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Wessman Arena, their final game of the 2017 calendar year.
