Yellowjackets 11, Finlandia 0
SUPERIOR, Wis. (December 16, 2017) - Following a convincing victory over Finlandia Friday night at Wessman Arena, the Yellowjacket women's hockey team was looking to finish off the sweep of the Lions Saturday afternoon, and in the process send 2017 out on a positive note.
They did that and then some.
Amber Heidenreich (Phillips, Wis./Hayward) and
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) each netted hat tricks as the Yellowjackets got goals from seven different players on the way to an 11-0 win Saturday afternoon. With the victory the Yellowjackets close out the first half of the season with an overall record of 8-4-0.
After scoring her first goal of the season Friday night,
Kelly Cockerill (Selkirk, Man./Oak Park) opened the scoring for the Yellowjackets Saturday, picking the corner from the top of the right circle just 1:45 into the game to put the Yellowjackets in front.
Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) assisted on the eventual game-winning goal. Martinson scored the first of her goals just over two minutes later, and before the period ended Heidenreich potted her first collegiate goal to give the Yellowjackets the 3-0 lead after one period.
Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) extended the lead at 7:11 of the second period, scoring from in tight to make it 4-0. Heidenreich scored her second of the game at 11:04 of the second period, banking the puck in off the goaltender's stick to make the lead five. Martinson followed with her second of the game at 16:20 of the middle frame, and the Yellowjackets led 6-0 after 40 minutes.
In the third period the Yellowjackets put the pedal to the floor, scoring five more times. Heidenreich finished her hat trick just 1:22 into the third period, and Martinson did the same at 5:35 on the power play. At 8:34 of the third period
Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover) scored her seventh of the year to make it a 9-0 game. A
Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) power play goal at 13:34 of the third period, her third of the season, gave the Yellowjackets double digit goals for the first time this season. The Yellowjackets closed out the scoring seconds later as
Sam Westgaard (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) scored her first collegiate goal on a shot from the left circle at 13:53 to make the final score 11-0.
In addition to her goals Martinson also had an assist in the game. Goodin had a big offensive day as well, dishing out five assists to go along with her goal.
Sky Brown (Lenore, Man./Virden Collegiate Institute) spent her afternoon at the lonely end of the rink, needing to make just nine saves to earn her first shutout of the season. She is now 8-4-0 on the year. At the other end Finlandia had a pair of goaltenders combine to make 58 saves.
Up Next: The Yellowjackets will return from the break and enjoy a three-game home stand beginning with a game against Northland College. Game time Friday, January 5 is set for 3:00 p.m.
