UW-Stevens Point 70, UW-Superior 57
SUPERIOR, Wis. (December 2, 2017) – The Yellowjackets gave UW-Stevens Point all they had on Saturday night, but the hot shooting Pointers were victorious in Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium. Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) scored a season-high 22 points in the loss.
The first five minutes were high energy on both sides. Scott scored the first two for Superior, knifing his way through the paint for the lay-in. The Yellowjackets got their first lead at 17:05 on another Scott layup, going ahead 6-5. The Pointers would fire back, going up nine after three straight 3-pointers, but Nate Kalien (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) would get a three of his own, assisted by Shaq Coleman (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East), cutting it to six. The Pointers stretched their lead in the first half, Coleman would find a layup at 5:19, and Scott added a three a minute later to dig into the lead, but the Pointers were up 43-23 at the half.
Point got their lead to 28 points midway through the second half, but that didn't stop Superior. The 'Jackets scored 11 straight, including a Vid Milenkovic (Zurich, Switzerland/DSB Belgrade, Serbia) and-one, and two Coleman free throws, getting the lead down to 13. Scott sank the final point for the 'Jackets at the line; the Pointers stole a win at the Mertz 70-57.
Superior continued their solid shooting from the floor, finishing 48 percent from the field, and was able to force 12 turnovers in the game. Scott's 22 points came on a phenomenal 10-of-13 shooting; Coleman scored 12 on 50 percent shooting 5-of-5 from the line. Kalien's six points were both from 3-point range.
The Pointer's Nate Dodge scored 27 points off the bench, sinking seven of Steven Point's 14 threes.
The 'Jackets will continue their home streak into next week, playing in their first UMAC contest of the season, tipping off with St. Scholastica at 5:30 p.m.
