Gustavus Adolphus 67, UW-Superior 46
WAVERLY, Iowa (December 30, 2017) – Superior played their second game in two days at the Wartburg Holiday Tournament Saturday afternoon, but couldn't beat the No. 17 Gustavus Adolphus Gusties.
Jade Tucker (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) got to the line early for Superior, knocking down the first two points for the 'Jackets at 8:51. Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) found a 2-point jumper just a minute later to take a 4-2 lead on the Gusties, but the Gustavus proved they could play, going on a 12-0 run to open up the game. Superior would struggle to find baskets in the early going, until Justine Larson (Stanchfield, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) sank two free throws at 3:48 to make it 14-6. The 'Jackets would then make a few stops and end the buzzer down only 17-9.
Amelia Leger (Andover, Minn./Andover) knocked down a 3-pointer to open the second quarter, while Kontny found back-to-back points to stop another Gustavus run, making it a 29-16 game. Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) hit her first 3-pointer with 2:13 remaining, assisted by Tucker to make it 34-19, and Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) made a put-back layup to finish the quarter down 36-21.
The Yellowjackets came back on a run to open the second half. Tucker, Kontny and Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) had a 6-0 run getting the Gustavus lead down to nine, but yet again, the Gusties put in baskets to extend their lead. Larson hit back-to-back free throws at 4:36 and then two more were added by Taylor Kane (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) just seconds later. The 'Jackets would get more baskets from Kane, Reinertsen and Norlin to dig into the Gustie lead, ending the period down 12, 50-38. Â
Norlin found scores twice in a row, one assisted by Larson to get four points by the seven-minute mark, and then hit again at 4:08 for six points after an offensive rebound. Norlin would then again get a 2-point jumper with two minutes left, but this would the final basket of game for Superior.
Norlin, an All-Tournament Team selection, was the only 'Jacket in double-figure scoring, with 15 points. She also had seven rebounds and a block. Kontny finished with eight points and one steal.
Mikayla Miller finished with a game-high 20 points for Gustavus.
The Yellowjackets will play their next game Wednesday Jan. 3, taking on Crown College on the road at 7:30 p.m.
