St. Scholastica survives round two of bridge battle against Yellowjackets

Despite knocking down nine three-pointers in the game, the University of Wisconsin Superior could not amount the final push needed to knock off the College of St. Scholastica in round two of the bridge battle, as the Saints took the Yellowjackets' Upper Midwest Athletic Conference home finale 83-74 on Saturday afternoon in Mortorelli Gym.

Unfortunately for UW-Superior (6-17, 5-9 UMAC), the defeat knocked the Yellowjackets from postseason contention in the UMAC. The two teams were neck-and-neck through the first half, trading 14 lead changes throughout the game as well as 11 tie scores. Trailing 40-39 at the half, UWS scored seven-straight points opening up the second half, but St. Scholastica (14-9, 10-4 UMAC) quickly had the answer, scoring the next seven points to regain the lead. The Saints had another six-point run late in the half to push the lead out to seven with 50 seconds remaining. The teams traded free throws to close the final minutes, but the Yellowjackets would not be able to chip into the lead to get back into it as St. Scholastica finished 9-of-11 from the free throw line in the second half.

UW-Superior would finish the game shooting 43.9 percent as a team, knocking down 9-of-16 three-pointers in the game. Four Yellowjackets reached double figures, led by freshman Rafael Monteio and sophomore Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights H.S.) who had 15 points each. Collin Anderson scored 16 points off the bench to lead all scorers. The Saints shot  47.1 percent for the game.
