The University of Wisconsin Superior split a pair of games on Sunday morning to close out the Finlandia Dome Classic in Marquette, Michigan. After falling 8-0 to Marian University in the first game, the Yellowjackets bounced back with a 4-3 comeback victory over Concordia University Wisconsin in their tournament finale.
UW-Superior (2-2) fell behind early against Concordia (3-1) as the Falcons looked primed to go undefeated in the tournament, scoring a single run in the first and adding two in the third. Junior Jamie Reiser went 3-for-3 to lead CUW on the day, but freshman right-hander
Megan Pehrson (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids H.S.) (1-1) would allow just six hits while going the distance, giving up three runs but just one earned and striking out five Falcons on the day.
The Yellowjackets started to make their move in the sixth inning when they loaded the bases after a single from first-year infielder
Sarah Fjeran (Duluth, Minn./Marshall School). Senior Shelby Gehrken drove in a run on a fielder's choice, scoring first-year infielder
Bailey Kinnunen (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids H.S.), but UWS would get no closer in the inning. A Concordia error helped keep the seventh inning alive for the Yellowjackets, and Kinnunen made the Falcons pay for it with an RBI single, scoring junior
Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes H.S.). After a pitching change, first-year infielder
Bobbi Jean Miller (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis H.S.) ripped a ground rule double, scoring sophomore pinch runner
Lizzy Borgwardt (Verona, Wis./Verona Area H.S.) to even the score. First-year infielder
Damara Theis (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee H.S.) drove in a run on a ground ball in the infield, putting UW-Superior on top, and Pehrson shut the door in the bottom of the inning to send the Yellowjackets home with a victory.
Earlier in the day, UW-Superior surrendered multiple runs in the first, third, and sixth to fall to Marian (2-1) in six innings. Senior
Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld H.S.) (0-2) took the loss on the mound, giving up seven earned with no help from three errors by the Yellowjacket defense on the day. Hendrickson was one of three players with a hit for UWS. Kinnunen had the Yellowjackets' lone extra-base hit, a double.
