The University of Wisconsin Superior plated 14 runs but could not contain the offense of Macalester College as the Scots swept a doubleheader against the Yellowjackets, taking game one 7-5 before blowing up for an 18-9 victory in game two at Nicholson Field in St. Paul, Minnesota.
UW-Superior (2-9) surrended a pair of runs in the first inning against Macalester (10-6), a sign of things to come in a high-scoring day for both teams. The Scots opened up a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third before sophomore infielder
Braeden Barr (San Diego, Calif./Grossmount H.S.) launched his first home run of the season, getting the Yellowjackets on the board in the top of the fourth. Macalester extended its lead out to 7-1 in the bottom of the inning on the back of a pair of RBI doubles.
An error on the Scots infield got the fifth inning started for the UWS offense, and freshman outfielder
Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater H.S.) eventually came around to score on a wild pitch with the bases load. Sophomore outfielder
Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) added an RBI single later in the inning, bringing home junior shortstop
Nick McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle H.S.). McNosky came to bat again in the top of the sixth, adding a two-run home run of his own that pulled the Yellowjackets within 7-5, but they would get no closer on the day.
Senior right-handed
Brock McDermid (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski H.S.) (0-1) suffered the defeat for UW-Superior, striking out two in 5.2 innings of work while allowing seven earned on 11 hits with two walks on the day, giving way to rookie left-hander
Harrison Leet (Palmer, Alaska/Portage H.S.) for the final out of the game. Matthew Plisko (3-1) picked up the victory for the Scots, allowing one earned while striking out seven in 4.0 innings. Nick McMullen pitched 1.1 perfect innings to pick up his third save of the season.
Macalester 17, UW-Superior 8
The Yellowjackets fell behind once again in the first inning of game two as McMullen continued his dominance with an RBI double to give the Scots a 1-0 lead. UW-Superior had the answer rather quickly, plating seven runs in the top of the second. An error on the Macalester infield put sophomore
Stephen Albertson (Stillwater, Minn/Stillwater H.S.) on base ahead of a two-run home run by sophomore
Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna H.S.). Senior catcher
Nik Mattson (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) reached on a double, coming around to score on a single by sophomore infielder
Colin Welch (Acton, Calif./Golden Valley H.S.). After a walk by McNosky, Boyde singled home another run. McNosky came around to score on a double steal, chasing the Scots' starting pitcher Thomas Shogren after 1.2 innings. Albertson came around for the second time in the inning, driving in Boyde, and Miller singled home a third run in the inning to close the scoring.
Ben Castagnetti lifted his first of two home runs on the day, trimming the lead down to 7-2 leading off the bottom of the inning. A single and a double brought home another run in the second inning, and Castagnetti added his second solo shot in the bottom of the third. Another Macalester error brought home first-year outfielder
Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater H.S.) to give the Yellowjackets an 8-4 lead headed to the bottom of the inning. The bottom fell out for UW-Superior in the fourth as the Scots scored 11 runs in their half of the inning, including a three-run home run by Quentin Stuart and a grand slam by Alex Baretta. That spelled the end of the day for junior left-handed
Jonah Lundequam (Cumberland, Wis./Cumberland H.S.) (0-2), who surrended 11 earned runs on 10 hits and four walks in 3.1 innings.
Macalester tacked on four more runs in the bottom of sixth inning, giving the victory to reliever Zach Anderson (1-0), who allowed just one unearned run in 3.1 innings, striking out two in the process.
