UW-Superior drops two in rivalry match-up with St. Scholastica

The University of Wisconsin Superior snapped its five-game winning streak Tuesday as the Yellowjackets were swept in their rivalry Upper Midwest Athletic Conference match-up against the College of St. Scholastica, dropping both ends of the doubleheader 4-1 and 9-1 in five innings in Duluth.

UW-Superior (12-11, 5-3 UMAC) could not get its offense going against a pair of hurlers for the Saints, held to just one run for the first time since March 21 when the Yellowjackets fell 2-0 to Ave Maria (Fla.) University earlier this season. UWS scraped across its lone run on three hits in the first game, when first-year center fielder Bobbi Jean Miller (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis H.S.) singled home rookie shortstop Bailey Kinnunen (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids H.S.) for an unearned run after a passed ball moved her to second following a walk.

St. Scholastica (15-11, 8-0 UMAC) did all of its damage in the fifth inning, with back-to-back doubles leading off the inning to get the first run of the game across.  After a single an an intentional walk to load the balls, the Saints' Toni Bishop singled home two runs. Another walk and another single helped put the Saints up by four before the Yellowjackets got their run in the top of the next inning. Rookie right-hander Megan Pehrson (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids H.S.) (8-4) suffered the defeat, tossing 4.2 innings allowing four earned runs on six hits while striking out three. She handed the ball to senior Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld H.S.) for the final 1.1 innings, and she struck out one while allowing three hits but no runs. Chrisi Mizera (7-6) allowed just one unearned run on three hits while striking out five for CSS.

St. Scholastica 9, UW-Superior 1 (5 innings)
The Saints dispatched the Yellowjackets in short order, scoring at least a run in every inning they sent a batter to the plate including five runs in the second. Hendrickson gave up seven runs including five earned on eight hits in just 2.0 innings before turning the ball over to sophomore Kayla Hartl (Medford, Wis./Medford Area H.S.), who made her first appearance of the season throwing 2.0 innings, allowing two earned on five hits. St. Scholastica's Vanessa Kohl worked a five-inning complete game, striking out three while allowing yet again just one unearned run on four hits.

The Saints hit three singles with an error mixed in during the first as Mizera singled home two unearned runs to put CSS on the board early. They continued to peck away at UW-Superior in the sixth with five more singles, and a bases-clearing double by Hannah Borgeson doing the bulk of the damage to chase Hendrickson after two innings.Junior outfielder Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld H.S.) singled home a run for the Yellowjackets in the top of the third, but they'd get no closer on the day as the Saints scored a run in the third and the fourth inning to claim a mercy rule-shortened victory.
