The University of Wisconsin Superior made it three-straight victories this season against Crown College, handing the Storm its first conference defeat of the season with a 1-0 walk-off win in game one of the teams' Upper Midwest Athletic Conference doubleheader. Crown bounced back with a 6-1 defeat of the Yellowjackets in game two at Liebaert Field in Superior on Wednesday afternoon.
UW-Superior (13-12, 6-4 UMAC) closed out a game one pitcher's duel as junior infielder
Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes H.S.) ripped a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh to score sophomore catcher
Gabby Gidley (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) for the game's only run. Each team had a runner thrown out at home in the sixth inning, and rookie right-hander
Megan Pehrson (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids H.S.) worked in and out of trouble in a compete game shutout, striking out nine while allowing seven hits on the day. Lis King worked both ends of the twinbill on the mound for Crown, striking out two while allowing one run on 10 hits in 6.1 innings for game one.
Crown 6, UW-Superior 1
Four Yellowjacket errors cost UWS in game two as Crown capitalized for four unearned runs on the day, after first-year outfielder
Bobbi Jean Miller (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis H.S.) scored junior outfielder
Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld H.S.) to give UW-Superior a 1-0 lead in the second. Senior right-hander
Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld H.S.) held the Storm to just seven hits, but her defense did not help her on the day as Crown scored six unanswered runs.
After a dropped ball on a caught stealing attempt on the Yellowjacket infield, Crown's Janelle Williams singled home her first of two runs on the day to know the game at 1-1. King contributed with her bat as well as on the mound, launching a sixth-inning home run. The Storm tacked on three runs, pulling away in the seventh inning including an error on the UWS infield with the bases loaded that scored a pair of runs.
King picked up the victory, allowing one earned on six hits in a complete game effort. First-year third baseman
Sarah Fjeran (Duluth, Minn./Marshall School) was 2-for-3 at the plate in game two.
