UW-Superior splits with old WIAC rival UW-Stout in non-conference twinbill

The University of Wisconsin Superior met up with a conference rival of old on Wednesday, splitting a non-conference doubleheader against Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe the University of Wisconsin Stout falling 20-10 in game two after an 11-4 victory in game one on Wednesday afternoon at Whereatt Field in Superior.

UW-Superior (11-23) got a complete game effort from senior Trevor Stone (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn H.S.) in game one, as the right-hander allowed just two earned runs on 12 hits while striking out three on the day. The Yellowjackets knocked Paul Danczyk out of the game after 3.1 innings, scoring eight earned against the Blue Devils' starter. Junior outfielder Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel H.S.) led off the bottom of the first with a double, coming home on a single by sophomore Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.). After another double by senior Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward H.S.), UW-Superior would load the bases on a walk, bringing home four runs in the inning on a sacrifice fly by senior catcher Nik Mattson (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) and a two-run double by junior Nick McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle H.S.). UW-Stout (9-24) got on the board in the top of the second thanks in large part to the first of two Yellowjacket errors on the day. Pitts singled again in the bottom of the second, stole a base, and eventually scored the first of two runs in the inning on a two-run single by sophomore Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna H.S.).

A solo home run and another UWS error helped the Blue Devils score two in the top of the third, and they added their fourth and final run in the fourth. Another single from Boyde and a second double from Patko chased Danczyk in the fourth, with Miller knocking in his third run of the day on a third-straight base hit for the Yellowjackets. Rookie Corey Albertson tacked on a run on a groundball fielder's choice. UW-Superior needed just one hit to score three runs in the fifth, with the majority of the damage done on a bases loaded double from Boyde, while another run came home on a wild pitch to give the Yellowjackets their final 11-4 margin.

UW-Stout 20, UW-Superior 10
The Yellowjackets stopped the offensive onslaught of the Blue Devils in just one inning as UW-Stout scored two runs in each of the first, second, fifth, and seventh innings and  six in each of the fourth and sixth. The Devils scored 20 runs on 20 hits and five errors while UW-Superior needed just six hits to score their ten runs. The Yellowjackets scored eight runs on just three hits in the fifth with two batters hit-by-pitch and four more walks in the inning. Rookie Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater H.S.) contributed in the big hit in the inning, a two-run double. While UW-Superior scored its eight runs to cut the lead down to 12-9 after five, Stout scored six runs against a pair of Yellowjacket relievers in the top of the sixth. Miller added his third home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth, but UW-Superior would get no closer on the day.

Rookie right-hander Braeden Barr (San Diego, Calif./Grossmount H.S.) (0-4) suffered the defeat on the mound, allowing four earning on eight hits in 3.1 innings. Brandon Bohl pitched the first five innings for UW-Stout, walking seven and giving up four hits on they day. The Yellowjacket bullpen surrendered 12 runs on 12 hits and three walks in the final 3.2 innings of work.
