Yellowjackets 2, Crown 1 (OT)
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary has been the go-to text for people seeking a word's definition, origin, pronunciation, and even synonyms since it came into existence in 1828. In the current edition, the word dominant is defined as commanding, controlling, or prevailing over all others.
That's essentially what the Yellowjacket men's soccer team has done of late. Saturday at Minnesota Morris the Yellowjackets held a decisive edge in shots (30-6) and had an overwhelming territorial advantage in the match, but were forced to make the long trip home with nothing more than a 1-1 draw.
As Tuesday's home match with Crown unfolded, it was looking like it was going to be another one of those days. Once again the Yellowjackets had a big edge in shots and for long stretches of the day they kept Crown bottled up on their own end of the field.
For the second game in a row the 'Jackets needed extra time, but this time they were able to break through and get themselves an all-important "W".
Midway through the first overtime a large scramble in front of the Crown goal ensued, with the Yellowjackets sending several shots on goal. After two attempts were denied a loose ball found
Jon Bucklew (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) and the senior placed a shot into the yawning goal, giving the Yellowjackets a 2-1 victory over the Storm at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
The Yellowjackets took the opening draw and immediately began to apply pressure. They opened the scoring early when rookie sensation
Blake Doyea (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) put home his fourth goal of the season in the seventh minute, staking the Yellowjackets to a 1-0 lead.
Crown's only real offensive burst of the match came just over ten minutes later when they put a pair of shots on goal, with the second resulting in Ger Jones' second goal of the year and a tie game with 18:27 elapsed in the game.
After outshooting the Storm 11-2 the Yellowjackets ramped up the offense even more in the second half, but time and again Storm goaltender Eli Etzel was there to make the stop. Etzel finished the match with nine saves.
Dalton VonKaenel (Eagan, Minn./Eagan H.S.) got the start in goal for the Yellowjackets, finishing with one save to earn the win and even his record on the year at 1-1.
Up Next: It's a quick turnaround for the Yellowjackets (4-2-1, 1-0-1 UMAC) as they host Hamline University Wednesday at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
