Superior falls victim to No. 8 Northwestern and Martin Luther

Northwestern 3, UW-Superior 0 | Martin Luther 3, UW-Superior 2

NEW ULM (September 27, 2017) – Superior dropped tough games on the road in a triangular against No. 8 ranked University of Northwestern and Martin Luther.

The Yellowjackets had a tough battle in their first match against the No. 8 ranked Eagles. Superior fell 3-0 to the Eagles, but still posted some good numbers. Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) had 30 assists in the game, getting all but one in the match. Leah Nightingale (Dayton, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's ) led the team in kills for the match with seven, Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji ) and Mara Cameron (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) were close behind with six each. VerWay also led the team defensively with 10 digs on the match.

The second match was much tighter than the first. The Yellowjackets put the pressure on the host Martin Luther Knights, pushing them to five sets. Superior took the third set, going up 17-10 after Nightingale and Cameron blocked an attack from the Knights. They finally sealed the set 25-18 on a Knights' error. The fourth set also played in the Yellowjackets opening up the game early 9-1 after a Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji ) ace. A Megan Holz (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) ace put the game 24-15 in favor of the Yellowjackets and then Ashley Runck (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley ) finished the set on a kill assisted by VerWay. The 'Jackets couldn't win the decisive fifth set, falling 3-2.

VerWay added 41 more assists to her season total in the second match, while Anna Ribich (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East) totaled 13 kills and Colligan added 12.

The Yellowjackets hope to turn things in their favor this weekend as they take on Crown College on the road on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 3 p.m.
