UW-Superior 6, St. Scholastica 3
SUPERIOR, Wis. (January 10, 2018) – In an always anticipated rivalry game, Superior walloped the St. Scholastica Saints Wednesday night, scoring six, including two from Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover).
The 'Jackets got the party started early, just 17 seconds in as Goodin scored her eighth of the season, assisted by Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) and Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids). The 'Jackets then found another early opportunity, as Dulong added another point, finding twine, unassisted at 5:25 for her second of the game. The first period would end with the 'Jackets up 2-0.
The scoring would continue in the second period, Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) scored her seventh of the season on an assist from Amber Heidenreich (Phillips, Wis./Hayward) at 4:09. The Saints fired back when they caught Superior on a line change, as Abby Sawyer scored the two-on-one.
Martinson would make it a three-goal lead once again, scoring her 11th goal of the season; she would get the initial shot off and find her own rebound for the score. Goodin got an assist on the play at 10:15 of the second period.
St. Scholastica cut into the Yellowjacket lead towards the end of the period, taking advantage of a power play opportunity at 17:32, and then again on the following rush, making it 4-3. Goodin scored her second of the game just minutes later, assisted by Dulong and Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Man./St. Mary's Academy) to go up 5-3 at the second intermission.
Both teams were quiet around the net to start the third period. The 'Jackets kept piling on shot, and finally got one to go in at 8:27 as Agnese Apsite (Dreilini, Latvia/Rig Distance Secondary) scored her first goal in a Yellowjacket uniform, assisted by Heidenreich and Patrick to extend the lead to 6-3.
This goal would emphatically finished off the Saints as Superior got the rivalry win.
Superior more than doubled the shots of St. Scholastica 51-19 on the night; Sky Brown (Lenore, Man./Virden Collegiate Institute) made 16 saves between the pipes.
The Yellowjackets will make the great migration to Finlandia this weekend, playing back-to-back games with the Lions on Friday and Saturday.
