HANCOCK, Mich. (January 12, 2018) – The Yellowjackets made the four-hour drive to Hancock, Mich. Friday to play Finlanida for the third time this season. Superior was able to replicate their performances from the first two games to beat the Lions.
Two goals came in the first period for the 'Jackets. Agnese Apsite (Dreilini, Latvia/Rig Distance Secondary) scored her second goal in two games at the 6:12 mark, assisted by Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) to get out in front. Three minutes later, Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) scored on an assist from Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover) making the game 2-0 at the end of one.
The second saw a lone goal for the Yellowjackets. Sam Westgaard (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) found twine at 8:04 of the period, getting assists from Kaylee Wood (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) and Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Man./St. Mary's Academy). The 'Jackets were in a familiar spot after two, as they have held a 3-0 lead after two periods in every game vs Finlandia this season.
The Lions answered in the first two minutes of the final go-around, when Kait Ryynanen scored at 1:48. The two-score lead soon became three once again as Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) scored at 3:54 on a dish from Amber Heidenreich (Phillips, Wis./Hayward).
The 'Jackets would add two more goals to finish on the Lions. Â Shelton put another point on her line, assisted by Sergent and Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) at 11:42 followed by a goal from Goodin, assisted by 16:45, assisted by Shelton.
The 'Jackets put all they had into the net firing 44 shots, compared to Finlandia's 10. Sky Brown (Lenore, Man./Virden Collegiate Institute) had a relatively light day in goal, saving nine shots.
Superior will play one final contest with Finlandia tomorrow, as the puck drops 4 p.m. eastern time.
