Yellowjackets Crush Crown, Advance To U.M.A.C. Championship Match

Yellowjackets 6, Crown 2

SUPERIOR, Wis.: They don't ask how, but how many. Or something like that. It's a saying that gets uttered every time something goes your way, but maybe you have to work for it a little more than expected.

Such was the case Wednesday for the Yellowjacket men's soccer team.

The defending Upper Midwest Athletic Conference playoff champion opened its title defense on its home pitch, facing a Crown College team it outshot 49-1 and shut out 4-0 just a few weeks ago. The Storm, however, had no intention of repeating that result, and were not going to go away quietly.

There were some tense moments early in the second half, but ultimately the Yellowjackets hit their stride and cruised to a 6-2 win over the Storm at the N.B.C. Spartan Sports Complex in Superior.

With the win, the Yellowjackets run their winning streak to 13, and they are now unbeaten in their last 18 (17-0-1). More importantly the victory gives the Yellowjackets the chance to defend their conference playoff title Saturday when they host St. Scholastica. It's the fourth straight year the Yellowjackets and Saints will battle for conference supremacy and a trip to the N.C.A.A. tournament.

The Yellowjackets came out of the gates flying and held a territorial advantage before striking first. Fernando Bicalho (Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil/Kickapoo (Wis.)) started the play on a corner kick, playing the ball to Elliot Chapman (Lancaster, England/Ripley St. Thomas) who then found Blake Doyea (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka), and the sophomore made no mistake, scoring from about 40 yards out to give the Yellowjackets the 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.

Crown answered with a goal of its own a short time later, moving the ball from the corner to the front of the goal where Kirby Shetler chipped it past Dalton VonKaenel (Eagan, Minn./Eagan H.S.) to tie the match.

The goal gave Crown life and early in the second half they took the lead when Storm Heyer beat VonKaenel with a shot from the outside in the 51st minute.

Joy was short-lived for Crown, however, as the Yellowjackets had a quick answer.

Less than a minute after giving up the go-ahead goal the Yellowjackets pulled even, as Chapman took a pass from Felix Blick (Linkoping, Sweden/Katedralskolan) and beat Crown goalkeeper Eli Etzel from a distance. Then just 48 seconds later the Yellowjackets took the lead for good when Bicalho scored his second of the year.

In the 61st minute the Yellowjackets got some breathing room when Chapman's pass from the corner found Eric Watson (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold) in front, and the junior captain chipped in his third of the year to make it a 4-2 match.

The Yellowjackets got some insurance a short time later courtesy of Bicalho and team goals leader James Bruce (Gladstone, Mich./Gladstone). The duo teamed up twice in a 1:14 stretch, with Bicalho setting up Bruce twice, once at 68:04 and again at 69:18 to make the final score 6-2.

Bicalho had a big afternoon, scoring once and adding three assists, while Chapman had a goal and a pair of assists.

Shot attempts favored the Yellowjackets, 31-3, as did shots on goal, 14-2.

VonKaenel got the win, improving his record to 14-1-1 for the year.

Up Next: The Yellowjackets (17-2-1, 11-0-1 U.M.A.C.) will host the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Championship match Saturday, November 3. The tilt with St. Scholastica will kick off at 4:30 p.m. at the N.B.C. Spartan Sports Complex.
