SUPERIOR, Wis.: James Bruce (Gladstone, Mich./Gladstone) scored the game-winning goal and added an assist to lead the UW-Superior men's soccer team to its second consecutive Upper Midwest Athletic Conference championship, 3-1 over St. Scholastica Saturday.
His 67th-minute goal broke a 1-1 tie and stood as the game winner. Blake Perry's (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) cross found Bruce's head and he directed into the back of the net for his 15th goal of the season.
Bruce also assisted on the opening goal in the 16th minute on a cross that Blake Doyea (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) put away for his fourth goal of the season. He was named tournament MVP for his efforts.
The Saints' Darby Henderson scored his second of the season on a header into the left side of the net nearly eight minutes into the second half to tie the game before Bruce's winner.
Eric Watson (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold) added his fourth goal of the season for insurance in the 70th minute and the Yellowjackets were on their way.
Dalton VonKaenel (Eagan, Minn./Eagan H.S.) posted a six-save effort for UWS, which improved to 18-2-1 on the season. The 'Jackets outshot the Saints, 19-17, in attempts and 10-7 on goal to beat CSS for the second time this season.
St. Scholastica fell to 11-8-2 in the loss. Corey Bulheller made seven saves in goal for the visitors.
The Yellowjackets will learn their postseason fate Monday at 12 p.m. in the Division III men's soccer selection show on ncaa.com.
