DULUTH, Minn.: Freshman defender
Erin Schoborg (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) collected a loose ball in the box in the final minute and slipped it past St. Scholastica goalkeeper Roni Rudolph to lift the UW-Superior women's soccer team to a 1-0 win in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference semifinals Wednesday.
Schoborg's first career goal with just 37 seconds remaining in regulation time, gave the Yellowjackets (8-10-3) their first-ever berth in the U.M.A.C. championship match Saturday. They will face the winner of the second semifinal between No. 2 Northwestern and third-seeded Northland at 5 p.m., on Wednesday.
The victory is also the first for UWS against its bridge rival in women's soccer in 16 tries.
It seemed that for the second consecutive match the Yellowjackets were destined for extra time before the winner, which came as a result of their only corner kick of the day.
The Saints (13-5-2), who came in winners of eight straight, outshot UWS, 30-3, holding a 10-2 edge in shots on target. Reigning U.M.A.C Defensive Player of the Week
Madison Gutekunst (Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka) was up to the task, though, withstanding constant pressure. She earned her third consecutive clean sheet and sixth of the season, making 10 saves.
At the other end, Rudolph was rarely tested with the 'Jackets' only other shot on goal coming off the foot of freshman
Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) in the 20th minute. In fact, the goal came on the only shot of any kind for UWS in the second half.
