Concordia 3, Yellowjackets 1
SUPERIOR, Wis.: The Yellowjacket women's soccer team didn't have much time to savor Saturday's thrilling overtime win over Crown College. Less than 24 hours after
Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) scored the winning goal with less than a minute to play in the extra session, the Yellowjackets welcomed Concordia College to town. The Cobbers entered the match looking to get their record back to the .500 mark, while the Yellowjackets were looking to win consecutive games for the first time in 2018.
And for the injury-depleted Yellowjackets, Sunday wasn't their day. Concordia scored early and held a significant territorial advantage, forcing the Yellowjackets to play from behind and in the end the visitors picked up the 3-1 win on a frigid afternoon at the N.B.C. Spartan Sports Complex.
Concordia opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Kalli Baarstad scored from the left side of the box to make it 1-0. Rachel Nemer later made it 2-0, getting a loose ball in the box after a corner kick hit traffic.
Early in the second half Concordia pushed the lead to 3-0 when Taylor Barth got the ball in the middle of the field from 20 yards out and blasted a shot over the outstretched arms of Yellowjacket goalkeeper
Morgan Philliber (Apple Valley, Minn./Edina).
The Yellowjackets broke the shutout in the 76th minute, and again it was Schussman doing the damage. A midfield turnover came to
Sarah Fjeran (Duluth, Minn./Marshall School) who carried the ball down the right side of the field as a clear two-on-one developed. Nearing the box Fjeran played the ball to the middle where Schussman got it, and the freshman made no mistake, ripping a shot past Concordia goalkeeper Alexis Jemtrud to cut the deficit to 3-1.
From there the Yellowjackets began to apply more pressure, but were unable to generate further scoring chances. At the other end Concordia had a couple chances to get that goal back, but the Yellowjacket defense stood firm.
Philliber got the start against her former team and finished the match with eight saves on 11 shots. Her record for the year dropped to 1-3-1.
Up Next: The Yellowjackets (3-8-1, 3-4-0 U.M.A.C.) will hit the road for a non-conference match Thursday, October 10 when they will take on Macalester. The match will get underway at 7:30 p.m.
