DE PERE, Wis.: Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) scored a 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds, Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) had 21 points an 10 boards and the UW-Superior women's basketball team escaped a furious Carthage comeback for a 72-71 season-opening victory at the St. Norbert Tip-Off Tournament Friday.
The Yellowjackets (1-0) will play the winner of the second game of the day between St. Norbert and Marian Saturday at 3 p.m., at Mulva Sports Center.
Norlin was 11-for-15 from the field while Reinertson shot 6-of-12. Norlin also had three assists, three steals and two blocks for the Yellowjackets. Reinertsen chipped in two assists and a steal. Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) was the other Superior player in double figures with 10 points.
Carthage (1-1) stormed back from a 61-46 deficit after three quarters to put a scare into the Yellowjackets, who were limited to just 11 points in the final 10 minutes, but were able to hold off the Lady Reds, nonetheless, for the win.Â
A Carthage three-pointer from Bailey Gilbert cut the 'Jackets' lead to 66-58 with 5:53 left. White answered with a trey of her own to restore a double-digit edge. On the next trip down the court, though, Autumn Kalis canned another triple. later, she grabbed a steal and went in for a layup, making it 69-63 with 4:32 left.
Carthage got to within three on a Sammie Woodward three and then cut it to a 69-68 game when Rachel Szydlowski hit a layup with 3:01 remaining. Norlin responded with a bucket for the 'Jackets, and Reinertsen hit 1-of-2 from the free-throw line with 23 seconds left to put the game on ice.
UWS shot 46.9 percent from the floor for the game (29-of-62), while Carthage was 27--for-65 (41.5 percent). The Yellowjackets won the battle fo the boards, 38-32.
Tied, 9-9, in the first quarter, the Yellowjackets engineered a 12-0 run to take control in the early going. Reinertsen got things started with a jumper off of a pass from Norlin with 5:07 left in the quarter, two of her six points in the stretch, that, by the end of it, saw UWS lead, 21-9, at the two-minute mark. Morgan Anderson (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) closed the period with a three-point play that made it a 27-14 game.
Carthage went on a 12-2 run itself over 2:48 to start the second quarter, cutting the Superior advantage to 29-28. but that was as close as the Lady Reds got the rest of the half. had seven of the 'Jackets' final nine points of the half, including a 3-pointer in the final minute for a 40-34 edge. UWS led, 42-38, at halftime.

Carthage got 16 points from Szydlowski and 14 apiece from Gilbert and Kalis. Woodward contributed 11 points to the Lady Reds' cause.
