Stevens Point 5, Yellowjackets 4
Â
SUPERIOR, Wis.: For much of the game Friday, the Yellowjacket women's hockey team was dominant. Offensive zone time, shots on goal, power play time – the Yellowjackets came out on top against UW-Stevens Point.
The only thing missing from that list, however, is goals scored, and that's the one place Stevens Point trumped the Yellowjackets. The Pointers rode a big third period, one which saw them score four teams to edge the Yellowjackets 5-4 at Wessman Arena.
Â
Stevens Point posted the only goal of the first period when Dani Heitsman scored just 4:08 into the game to make it 1-0.
Â
Early in the second period the Yellowjackets got the equalizer. Sophomore
Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) scored her first goal of the season, getting assists from
Mandy Tomlinson (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca) and
Amber Heidenreich (Phillips, Wis./Hayward) at 6:33 of the period.
Â
A few minutes later Tomlinson scored, netting her second of the year at 9:35 to put the Yellowjackets ahead 2-1. Heidenreich picked up her second assist of the game on the goal. Then, with just two seconds to play in the period freshman
Ty Bischoff (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) scored her first collegiate goal, and the Yellowjackets went up 3-1 after 40 minutes.
Â
Stevens Point made that lead disappear in a hurry as the third period unfolded, and it was one person doing the bulk of the damage. Mackenzie Kratch pulled the Pointers to within one with a power play goal just 1:29 into the period. She added another goal to tie the game less than a minute later at 2:05.
Â
The Pointers moved into the lead at 6:54 when Anna Cheney scored to make it a 4-3 game. Then with just under four minutes to play in regulation Kratch scored the game-winning goal, and completed the hat trick in the process to make it a 5-3 game.
Â
The Yellowjackets got one back in the final seconds when
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) scored a shorthanded goal with 25 seconds to play, making the final score 5-4.
Â
Dulong, Tomlinson, Heidenreich, and
Tessa Jorde (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) all had multi-point games for the Yellowjackets.
Catherine Johnson (Lakeville, Minn./St. Paul Academy) made the start in goal for the Yellowjackets and took the loss, finishing the game with 18 saves. Her record for the year is now 1-5-0.
Â
Up Next: The Yellowjackets (2-5-0, 0-2-0 W.I.A.C.) and Pointers will play the second game of their weekend series Saturday afternoon. The opening faceoff is set for 2:00 p.m. at Wessman Arena.
