SUPERIOR, Wis.: The UW-Superior women's hockey team came back from three one-goal deficits against UW-Stevens Point to earn a 3-3 tie at Wessman Arena Saturday.
The Yellowjackets got goals from three different skaters to earn their first point in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, moving to 2-5-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the league this season.
Freshman Tessa Jorde (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) scored 5:51 into the third period to knot the game at 3-all after UWSP's Alex Grubbs scored her second of the game, short-handed with 29 seconds remaining in the second period, to hand the lead back to the Pointers.
Jorde put the puck past UWSP goaltender Sydney Conley from the left circle, assisted by Rachel Garland (Windsor, Colo./Colorado Connections Academy) and Kaylee Wood (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park), for her second goal of the season. Conley was outstanding for the Pointers, making 48 saves to keep her team in the game, as the Yellowjackets controlled large stretches of action, leading to a 51-27 advantage in shots on goal.
Gubbs' second goal of the day came just 36 seconds after Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) tied the game, 2-2, on a 5-on-3. Dulong's second in as many games came from Jamie Davison (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) at 18:55 of the second.
Stevens Point (3-3-1, 1-1-1) opened the scoring at 15:02 of the first period when Gubbs went in alone of UWS goalie McKenzie Whalen (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) (24 saves), beating her stick side. Just 2:50 later, Jenna Curtis (Webster, Wis./Webster) and Jenna Byfuglien (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) combined to knot thigs at 1-1.
Sophie Regovic put the pointers up, 2-1 at 5:45 of the second before Dulong's tally.
The Yellowjackets return to action, hosting Augsburg Tuesday at 7 p.m.
