St. Scholastica 3, Yellowjackets 1
Â
DULUTH, Minn.: You only need look across St. Louis Bay to see one of the oldest and most played rivals for the Yellowjacket men's hockey team. In a rare Tuesday meeting, the Yellowjackets went across the bridge to write the latest chapter in the rivalry with St. Scholastica.
Once conference opponents, the Yellowjackets and Saints live in different leagues now, meaning the match-ups are much less frequent. A year ago a tight game went the way of the Yellowjackets at Wessman Arena, and this time around the Saints defended their home ice.
St. Scholastica scored the first three goals of the game and then held off a late Yellowjacket surge, winning 3-1 at Mars Lakeview Arena in Duluth.
Â
The first period was filled with back-and-forth play, with both teams having chances to jump on the board first. At the 7:35 mark the Saints broke through, with Dustin Cordeiro picking up a rebound off a shot from the point to make it 1-0.
Â
As the second period unfolded the Yellowjackets carried the play for long stretches but couldn't get anything past Saints' goaltender Nick Trenciansky. With 17 seconds to play in the middle frame the 'Jackets took a penalty, and before the teams went to the break the Saints made them pay. Sam Fuss got the goal, snapping a shot from the high slot that beat
A.J. Smith (Keller, Texas/Southlake Carroll) low.
Â
A neutral zone turnover early in the third period gave Cordeiro a breakaway, and with just 2:05 gone in the third period he beat Smith stick side to make it 3-0.
The Yellowjackets would finally break through near the midpoint of the third.
Jordan Martin (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey Collegiate) spotted a streaking
Andrew Durham (Richardson, Texas/Plano East) who carried into the St. Scholastica zone and his shot from the right circle beat Trenciansky under the bar on the glove side to make it 3-1 at 9:57. It was the seventh goal of the year for Durham, who has now scored a goal in six straight games.
Â
With more than a half period to go the Yellowjackets began to press, but the rest of the way the Saints shut them down. Even a late power play chance didn't go the Yellowjackets' way and the Saints held on for the win.
Â
Smith made his second start in a row for the Yellowjackets and finished the game with 30 saves.
