SUPERIOR, Wis.: Montroy Scott scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the UW-Superior men's basketball team, but UW-River Falls used a balanced attack to defeat the Yellowjackets, 75-55, Wednesday at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
Scott posted his second double-double of the season to pace the 'Jackets, who dropped their fourth consecutive game to fall to 1-4 overall. The Falcons placed four players in double figures and improved to 3-1 with the win.
Scott was 6-for-14 from the field, including 5-of-7 from long range, adding three assists. Mac Reykdal (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) had nine points and five assists, while Andrew McGill (St. Germain, Wis./Lakeland Union) tallied eight and three boards. Thomas Robarge (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls Senior) had the best game of his young collegiate career with six points, two rebounds and two assists in 14 minutes off the bench.
UW-River Falls shot 50 percent from the floor in the opening half to help stake itself to a 39-23 halftime advantage. The Falcons led by as many as 19 when Austin Heidecker converted a layup with 26 seconds left before the break. Robarge knocked down a 3-pointer, assisted by Reykdal, on the final possession of the period for the 16-margin.
The Yellowjackets, who never led in the game, got the deficit down to nine points at with 11:27 remaining, as Scott rebounded a Heidecker miss and John Pioro (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) found Lucas LaMue (De Pere, Wis./Bay Port), who drained a trey to shave the Falcons' edge to nine at 51-42.
That was as close as Superior got. River Falls engineered a 14-7 run to extend it to a 65-49 game, a stretch capped by a Matt Keller four-point play with 5:31 remaining. Keller canned a 3-pointer, was fouled, and hit the ensuing free throw.
Keller scored a team-high 19 on four treys. Heidecker contributed 18 points, while Julian Jackson and Nathan Macho Jr. added 15 and 10 points, respectively.
UW-River Falls outrebounded, the 'Jackets, 51-28, including 19-3 on the offensive glass, leading to 20 second-chance points. The Falcons also turned 15 UWS turnovers into 13 points.
Superior returns to action Nov. 28 at 7 p.m., hosting UW-Eau Claire.
