BEMIDJI, Minn.: Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) scored a game-high 21 points and
Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) added 11 as the UW-Superior women's basketball team posted a strong road win, 58-50, over Division-II Bemidji State at the BSU Gymnasium Monday.
The Yellowjackets (3-1) controlled the game most of the way, never looking back after the Beavers (2-2) scored the first basket of the game.
Norlin, announced as a repeat winner of UMAC Player of the Week earlier Monday, showed why. She shot 10-for-14, collected five rebounds, blocked five shots and handed out two assists to lead the way. Carpenter registered five steals, two assists and a blocked shot to go with her own double-digit scoring efforts.
The 'Jackets built a 16-10 advantage through one quarter, using a 9-4 run over the final six minutes of the opening period. Carpenter finished things off by striping a BSU player and streaking to the hoop. She was fouled and made two free throws.
Mackenzie Kmecik (Superior, Wis./Superior) extended the lead with a three-point play two minutes into the second quarter to make it 21-12. She converted a layup and was fouled by the Beavers' Claire Wolhowe.
Norlin followed with six of Superior's next 10 points, making it a 31-21 game with a jumper in the lane with 2:45 to play in the half. After a BSU basket,
Marissa Ruiz (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) took a pass from Carpenter and drained a 3-pointer to grow the lead to 34-23 with just over two minutes left before halftime.
Bemidji State's Taylor Bray cut the UWS lead to 38-34 with a pair of free throws at the 6:42 mark of the third quarter, but Norlin answered with a fastbreak layup off of a feed from Eva Reinertson a minute later. Another hoop by Bray with 5:11 left in the quarter got the Beavers within four once more at 40-36, but they inched no closer the rest of the night.
Ellie Leadstrom (Superior, Wis./Superior) gave the 'Jackets a 49-40 edge as the quarter came to close on a jumper, and Norlin pushed it to an 11-point game with a layup off a Leadstrom assist with eight minutes remaining in the game. Another Norlin bucket gave UWS its largest lead of the night at 53-40 at the 7:44 mark.
The Yellowjackets limited Bemidji State to 32 percent shooting and were plus-six on the boards.
Brooklyn Bachmann paced the Beavers with 19 points, five rebounds and three steals.
