STEVENS POINT, Wis.: Fourth-ranked UW-Stevens Point rolled to a 79-36 win over the UW-Superior men's basketball team at Quandt Fieldhouse Saturday.
Freshman Lucas LaMue (De Pere, Wis./Bay Port) earned his first collegiate start and scored a team-high 12 points, shooting 4-for-4 from 3-point range, in 25 minutes, while senior Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) added 10 points and six rebounds for the YellowJackets, who fell to 1-6 on the season with the loss.
The Pointers placed three players in double figures, led by Nate Dodge, who had 23 points on 5-of-6 from beyond the arc in 22 minutes. Garrett Nelson added 13 off the bench and Drew Fredrickson had 10 points and four rebounds for Stevens Point, which improved to 4-1 on the season.
After Mac Reykdal (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) stripped Canon O'Heron and fed Ronny Galvan (Beloit, Wis./Beloit Turner) for a layup that tied the game, 2-2, just 2:35 into it, the Pointers ran off five consecutive points, making it 7-2 less than two minutes later. Reykdal answered with a 3-pointer at the 15:03 mark to pull within two at 7-5, but UWSP engineered a 10-2 run to give itself breathing room, capping the stretch with a Dodge layup in transition for a 17-7 edge, and was never seriously challenged the rest of the way.
The Pointers built a 43-16 lead at halftime, shooting 16-of-29 (55.2 percent) from the field.
The second half was more of the same as UWSP didn't let the Yellowjackets get any footing and cruised for the 43-point margin of victory.
The 'Jackets were limited to just 30 percent from the field for the game, but were outrebounded by just two, 32-30. They were dominated inside allowing 36 points in the paint, scoring 16 of their own.
