Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 19 St. Johns Tops Men’s Basketball

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn.: Senior Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) scored 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting, but the UW-Superior men's basketball team came out of its holiday break with a 94-53 loss to No. 19 St. John's (Minn.) at Sexton Arena Saturday.

The Johnnies, who improved to 8-1 on the season, shot nearly 58 percent from the field for the game, including 19-of-32 from the floor in the first half and 38-of-66 for the game.

Scott added for rebounds, three assists and three steals to lead the Yellowjackets, who fell to 2-10 on the year. Freshman Da'Koi Hines (Minneapolis, Minn./North Community) came off the bench to score a career-high seven points and grab three rebounds. Hines also collected a blocked shot and a steal in 17 minutes, to become the 'Jackets' third leading scorer on the day as Mac Reykdal (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) contributed eight points.

The Johnnies led, 22-15, midway through the first half when Hines hit a layup and was fouled to close to within five points. Hines missed the ensuing free throw and St. Johns scored the game's next 16 points to stake itself to a commanding 38-17 advantage with 5:32 remaining in the half. Freshman Carter Brown (Eau Claire. Wis./Regis Catholic) halted the run with a 3-pointer off of a pass from John Pioro (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) to get the Yellowjackets on the board again.

Scott hit a layup with 1:40 to go before the back to make it a 44-25 game, the closest Superior got the rest of the day. The Johnnies carried a 51-25 into halftime.

The St. Johns lead grew to as many as 42 with 12:52 left when Kyle Sorenson hit a layup that made it 75-33, but Superior used a Scott 3-pointer with 7:52 remaining that cut the lead to 78-43, the closest UWS got in the final 10 minutes.

St. John's received a game-high 23 points from Jubie Alade, while Oakley Baker (12), Sorenson (11) and Zach Hanson (10) each scored in double digits. The Johnnies outrebounded the 'Jackets, 40-28, and outscored them in the paint, 52-18.

The Yellowjackets returns to UMAC action, hosting Crown Wednesday at Mertz Mortorelli Gym at 7:15 p.m.
