SUPERIOR, Wis.: The UW-Superior women's basketball team erased a four-point deficit in the final 2:09 of the fourth quarter for visiting UW-Stout to force overtime, and outscored the Blue Devils, 14-8 in the extra session, to hand them their first loss of the season, 86-80, in the final game of the Superior Shootout Holiday Classic Sunday.
Down, 72-68, following a Kyncaide Diedrich jump shot for Stout,
Ellie Leadstrom (Superior, Wis./Superior) knocked down a jumper on the next possession and
Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) tied the game, 72-72, on a basket with just 13 seconds left.
The Yellowjackets (11-1) opened overtime with five consecutive points, keyed by an
Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) 3-pointer, assisted by
Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter), and never looked back, going 11-for-12 from the free-throw line to secure the win.
Norlin scored a career-high 32 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season, while Reinertsen and Leadstrom added career-best efforts of 25 and nine points, respectively.
Stout (10-1) placed four players in double figures, led by Bailey Diersen with 28 points and Diedrich with 23. Amber Fabeck contributed 18 and Shannan Watkins 11.
In a game that lived up to its billing, the two former Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rivals duked it out from the start with 11 ties and eight lead changes. Neither team led by more than more than nine on the day.
The 'Jackets opened a 17-10 advantage with less than two minutes left in the first quarter on a Reinertsen trey and held a five-point edge into the second period. UWS was up, 29-21, with 4:57 before halftime when the Blue Devils engineered a 12-2 run to take a 33-31 lead. Watkins hit a game-tying triple by and Fabeck a layup with 2:05 left. The game was knotted, 35-all at the half.
Carpenter hit a three, off of a pass from
Taylor Kane (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids), midway through the third to give Superior a 49-43 advantage. Stout came all the way back, retaking the lead into the fourth as Fabeck drained a three and was fouled for a four-point play and 56-55 edge.
Stout led by as many as five points two minutes into the fourth before the 'Jackets got four points from Reintertson and two from Leadstrom for the game's ninth tie at 61-61 with 5:41 left.
The teams traded buckets until Norlin's shot in the final seconds of regulation.
