SUPERIOR, Wis.: Fourteen UW-Superior women's basketball players scored points as the Yellowjackets cruised past Crown, 83-46, at Mertz Mortorelli Gym Wednesday.
Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) tied for a game-high-13 points while
Marissa Ruiz (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) and
Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) tallied 10 apiece off the bench to pace UWS (12-1, 5-0 UMAC). Superior got a season-high 41 points for its non-starters in the win. The 'Jackets' defense also forced 28 Crown turnovers, limited the Storm just 38.1 percent from the field and single-digit points in the first and third quarters.
UWS shot 47 percent from the floor for the game, including 57.6 in the first half.
Superior led, 20-4, with less than two minutes left in the first quarter. Reinertsen scored seven in the quarter to get her team off and running. The 'Jackets led, 23-9 after one.
UWS extended the lead to as many as 24 two times in the second quarter. White collected the rebound of a Ruiz jumper and put it back up and in with 3:49 left to make it a 41-17 game. Kostrova then hit a 3-pointer in the final minute for the 46-22 halftime margin.
The lead grew to 42 – the largest of the third quarter – when Kostrova knocked down another trey, assisted by
Mikayla Koivisto (Floodwood, Minn./Floodwood), with 1:25 left in the period to make it 66-24.
Crown's Charity Tevis got the Storm back to within 33 at 77-44 on a basket with 2:02 remaining, the closest it was in the fourth quarter.
Superior outrebounded Crown (2-10, 0-4), 40-28, behind a game-best 11 from
Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield).
Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) also led the 'Jackets with five of the team's 17 assists on the day.
The Yellowjackets hit the road to face Bethany Lutheran Saturday at 3 p.m.
