SUPERIOR, Wis.: Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) scored two goals and Jaime Davison's first collegiate goal stood as the game-winner at 5:02 of the third period, as the UW-Superior women's hockey team came from behind to top Finlandia, 4-2, at Wessman Arena Saturday.
Coupled with the Yellowjackets' 7-0 victory Friday, the weekend sweep is the first for UWS since taking both games at Finlandia Jan. 12-13, 2018.
Like Friday, the 'Jackets thoroughly dominated the Lions, but unlike Friday, found themselves trailing early. Finlandia's Abby Kolek beat UWS goaltender
McKenzie Whalen (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) just 3:39 in the game to stake the Lions to a lead they held through the first period, but Martinson knotted the game, 1-1, at 5:48 of the second off of an assist from
Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island).
Lauren Niska (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria Area) gave Superior (4-8-1) the lead seven minutes later when she put the puck past Finlandia goalie Sarah Gundry with an assist from
Myka Sutherland (Champlin, Minn./Home School).
Then came Davison's goal. She took a shot, which was blocked by a defender, got the puck back and beat Gundry to make it 3-1 with less than 15 minutes to play.
Martinson added her second goal of the day – and fourth of the weekend, also unassisted – at 7:42 on the power play. It was her team-leading seventh of the season and third with an extra skater.
Finlandia (0-11-0) added a power-play marker of its own at 14:03 to make things interesting as Catlin Siegel found Kylee Dyni to cut the deficit to 4-2, but the Lions got no closer.
Whalen made 11 saves to improve to 2-1-1 on the season. Gundry took the loss, her third of the year, making 54 saves.
UWS went 1-for-3 on the power play, while Finlandia converted one of its two chances.
The Yellowjackets close the first semester at Scholastica Tuesday. Puck drop at Mars-Lakeview Arena in Duluth is slated for 7 p.m.
